Toyota Land Cruiser 

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a rugged, go-anywhere four-wheel drive SUV with a spacious cabin and a durable diesel engine with plenty of pulling power.

It might not be as upmarket inside as a Land Rover Discovery, but it’s just as spacious. The back seats in five-seat models are wide, soft and supportive and even the rearmost seats in three-row Invincible versions are spacious enough for adults to get comfy.

It’s not just people the Land Cruiser can carry with ease – its boot is pretty spacious, too. There’s room for four large suitcases in five-seat mode and space to load up some camping gear and a pair of mountain bikes with their wheels attached with all the back seats folded.

Sadly, while it’s just as practical as other large SUVs, the Toyota certainly doesn’t feel as high-tech. Pick an entry-level car and you’ll have to make do without any touchscreen infotainment system at all and even the eight-inch display in Active models doesn’t come with satellite navigation as standard. For that you’ll have to pick a high-spec Icon or Invincible model.

Active

Active models represent the best value. They look smarter than the basic model thanks to 17-inch alloy wheels and a chrome grille. The biggest upgrade on the inside is the eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system that has a nine-speaker sound system and supports DAB digital radio. Additional kit includes rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, auto headlights, heated door mirrors and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.

Invincible

Toyota Land Cruiser Invincible models come with all the bells and whistles as standard, but they aren’t cheap. They look the same as Icon models on the outside, but you get additional kit such as adaptive suspension with an off-road mode and a limited-slip differential that’ll help it deal with tricky obstacles such as rock gardens. Inside, you get a leather interior, electric front seats that are heated and cooled and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav and a 14-speaker JBL stereo system. You also get tri-zone climate control, a height-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support and auto headlights. In terms of safety kit, you get automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, auto-dipping high beam, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.
