Mercedes GLA
When the first Mercedes GLA came out, jacked-up hatchbacks with a dash of off-road styling were viewed as a flash in the pan – a bit like fidget spinners or the Atkins diet. Turns out, these cars are here to stay.
But the latest Mercedes GLA commits more to the suburban SUV theme than before, so it’s 10cm taller than the old car and you can get it with massive 20-inch alloy wheels. Its gaping front grille is bigger than ever and the new LED headlights look super classy.
There are various vents and air diffusers on the car to give it a more sporty and off-road-ey vibe, but they’re fake and don’t do anything other than affect the car’s looks.
The Mercedes GLA’s interior has a very modern feel and the standout features are the twin infotainment displays like the ones you get in the Mercedes A-Class Hatchback. It’s a shame though that the screens in entry-level Sport models are quite small and miss out on Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
The system uses Mercedes’ latest MBUX software and it’s the best in the business. You can control it by using the touchscreen, a touch pad or by voice controls and you can even get an augmented reality sat-nav which overlays the directions on a live video feed from a camera above the car’s windscreen. Just the thing to help you navigate confusing roundabouts.
The digital experience is rounded off by the driver’s display screens behind the steering wheel instead of traditional analogue dials.
Overall, the interior quality is high, with nice materials on the dashboard and the doors. There are some scratchy, hard plastics a bit further down, however. It’s roomy too, with good seat- and steering-wheel adjustment for the driver, and passengers in the back will have a fair amount of space to get comfy.
Sport
Sport models come with the same man-made leather seats and smartphone mirroring for Apple and Android phones as SE cars but get a larger eight-inch infotainment display, rain-sensing wipers, 18-inch alloy wheels and dual-zone climate control. You also get a reversing camera and aluminium roof rails as standard.
AMG Line
AMG Line models combine sporty looks inspired by the high-performance GLA 45 models with affordable running costs. You get 19-inch alloy wheels, revised bumpers with metal trims, upgraded front brakes and sports seats with eye-catching red stitching alongside the same Apple and Android phone-compatible infotainment system as Sport models. Also standard are stainless steel pedal trims, a reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers and dual-zone climate control.
Exclusive Edition
The hybrid-only Exclusive Edition features a sporty-looking AMG bodykit, 19in wheels and privacy glass. The theme continues inside, with sports seats and steering wheel. There’s extra kit, too. Highlight is the 10.25in MBUX voice-controlled infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. There’s a 7in digital instrument display, wireless charging pad, reversing camera and a system that automatically steers the car into a parking space.
AMG
High-performance GLA 45 models come with a 381hp turbocharged petrol engine, 19-inch alloy wheels, revised suspension, upgraded brakes, four exhaust tips and an aggressive bodykit as standard. Inside you’ll find red seat belts, more supportive sports seats, a new AMG-badged steering wheel and the same eight-inch infotainment display with sat nav and smartphone mirroring as White Art Edition models.
S
You’re wrapped in sports seats trimmed in Artico leather and grip a flat-bottomed steering wheel with a non-slip surface. Keyless entry and go is fitted as standard, as are 20-inch alloys with a 5-twin-spoke style. The exterior also features the AMG Night package, and the Parking package, with front and rear sensors and a rear-view camera, is fitted. The AMG Dynamic Select system lets you tailor the car’s behavior to your tastes.
