MERCEDES BENZ - A CLASS

Mercedes A-Class A180 & A200

Mercedes A-Class Saloon

The Mercedes A-Class Saloon is a four-door car that’s similar in size to the AUDI A3 Saloon and Mazda 3 Fastback. It was released in 2018 as a slightly elongated version of the CLA four-door coupe and after a successful few months on sale in China, it came over to Europe as well.

The best part of the Mercedes A-Class Saloon is the interior – it’s arguably class-leading in terms of style and infotainment. You could easily be fooled into thinking you’re looking at an S-Class cabin thanks to the A-Class’ turbine-style air vents, expensive-looking trim pieces and chrome buttons. Ambient light, with 64 selectable colors, is an option that’ll make the cabin look even more eye-catching at night.

The entry-level infotainment setup is worth avoiding, though. It has a centre seven-inch infotainment screen and a seven-inch screen that replaces your conventional dials behind the steering wheel. In an interior that looks as pretty as the A-Class Saloon’s the wide expanse of plastics between the two screens looks ugly and the screens themselves have a low resolution.

It’s worth going for the top-of-the-range system with two high-res 10.25-inch displays. It features Mercedes’ amazing augmented on-screen sat-nav directions, which displays the road ahead complete with directions that appear to be hovering above it. Not only does it look very cool, it’s also functional – clearly marking your turn on roads where it is easy to lose your bearings such as large roundabouts and complex junctions.

The MBUX voice activation system fitted to all versions isn’t quite so good, it is supposed to recognize spoken commands, activated by the words ‘Hey Mercedes’. In practice, though, it gets muddled very easily and isn’t anywhere as good as an in-home system such as Amazon’s Echo.

Up front, the Mercedes A-Class Saloon will be very similar to the hatchback  with a driver’s seat that offers a wide range of adjustment so you can get comfortable whether your tall or small.

Sport

The Mercedes A-Class Saloon Sport comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, two-zone climate control and a sports steering wheel as standard in addition to cruise control, lane keeping assist and a pair of 7.0-inch infotainment displays with DAB digital radio and satellite navigation built in. You also get man-made Artico leather upholstery as standard.

AMG Line
In AMG Line trim, the Mercedes A-Class Saloon comes with an AMG bodykit, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, two-zone climate control and Artico man-made leather upholstery with contrasting red stitching. You also get cruise control, lane-keeping assist, two 7.0-inch infotainment displays with DAB digital radio and satellite navigation alongside a flat-bottomed leather-trimmed steering wheel as standard.

Mercedes A-Class Hatchback

If you’re wowed more by a car’s interior than its cornering ability, you’ll love the Mercedes A-Class. It has not only the most visually impressive cabins of any car of its type but gives plenty of bigger ones a run for their money too.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that this entry-level Mercedes is bargain basement to look at. Slim headlights and a whopping great grille with a huge Mercedes emblem mean this isn’t likely to be mistaken for a run-of-the-mill family hatchback at the local supermarket.

SE

Even the most basic A-Class comes with alloy wheels, two 7.0-inch digital displays, air-conditioning, cruise control and DAB radio. The seats have part-leather upholstery, the safety systems include Active Lane Keeping Assist and Attention Assist, and you can start the car without having to turn a key.

Sport

There are some welcome extra features on Sport over the basic SE, including larger alloy wheels and LED headlights. The trim in the cabin has a carbon fibre look, while the steering wheel has extra chrome trim and dual-zone climate control replaces the simpler air-conditioning. All that is on top of two 7.0-inch digital displays, cruise control, DAB radio and lots of safety systems.

AMG Line

Go for the top AMG Line trim and your A-Class will come with a sporty AMG bodykit, a chrome-trimmed single-louvre grille and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, meanwhile, the part-leather seats have contrasting red stitching, and the flat-bottomed steering wheel is trimmed in soft nappa leather. All that is on top of two 7.0-inch digital displays, cruise control, DAB radio and lots of safety systems.
