Ford EcoSport
On paper, the Ford Eco Sport has it all, because it has room for four adults and is fun to drive for a high-riding car.
Admittedly, initial impressions weren’t great, but the Eco Sport was given a comprehensive update in 2017 when it got chunkier exterior styling, a new interior, a new diesel engine and the option to have four-wheel drive. Sporty ST-Line trim is the most eye-catching – going for it brings 17 paint colors and four contrasting roof shades. However, the small SUV market has moved on, and Ford has other cool offerings such as the Ford Fiesta Active and Ford Puma, so the Eco Sport is in danger of looking like that once-cool uncle who now just seems a bit old and naff.
The Eco Sport's interior isn’t very eye-catching, but the top half of the dashboard is made from soft-touch plastics that make it feel better built than the cabins you’ll find in the Hyundai kona and the Citroen C3 Air cross. Compared with the Citroen, though, Ford’s general design is pretty humdrum.
On the upside, the Eco Sport's 8-inch infotainment system is clearer and easier to use than the system in the Citroen. And it comes with Apple Car Play and Android Auto as standard, so it’s easy to make phone calls, play music and navigate using the apps on your smartphone.
Unfortunately, the Ford Eco Sport doesn’t do so well in terms of practicality. Front and back-seat space are decent for this size of car – the Eco Sport has room for two tall adults – but the Citroen C3 Air cross is roomier and also has more adjustment to help your passengers get comfortable.
Titanium
Titanium models sit in the middle of the EcoSport range, so they get an upgraded eight-inch sat-nav display and larger 17-inch alloy wheels. Additional kit over Zetec models includes auto lights and wipers, cruise control, a rear-view camera, ambient lighting with a choice of seven colours and climate control. Remote central locking and a handy heated windscreen are carried over from Zetec versions.
One engine available with the Titanium trim 1L petrol
ST-Line models get sporty looks thanks to a blacked-out grille, a rear spoiler, side skirts and lowered sports suspension. Inside, they get suede-effect trim that looks and feels expensive, a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel and lots of racy-red stitching. Kit is carried over from Zetec models, so includes auto lights and wipers, cruise control, a rear-view camera, ambient lighting with a choice of seven colors and climate control. ST-Lines are the only models available with the excellent, £300, 675W B&O stereo.
