BMW X1

BMW X1

The  X1 is a small family SUV that priorities everyday practicality and usability over futuristic gimmicks and quirky styling. In this respect, it’s a bit like having Gordon Ramsay prepare you a lovely beef wellington. There’s no doubt it’ll taste delicious, but it isn’t quite as exciting, or as memorable, as having Heston Blumenthal rustle up some kind of nitrogen-infused beef-flavored edible wallpaper…

The way the BMW X1 looks makes it something of a wallflower in the small SUV world. Sure, the sporty front end you get in M Sport guise cars mimics the bigger X3 quite convincingly, but it can’t really hold a candle to the crease-ridden Volvo XC40 in the style stakes.

The same goes for the BMW interior, but at least the X3’s solid-feeling materials, super-intuitive infotainment system and spacious cabin help make it one of the easiest small SUVs to live with. It’s just a shame you don’t get any smartphone mirroring as standard.

There’s plenty of room in the front and the sliding and reclining rear seats mean three adults won’t feel too hemmed-in in the back. It’s pretty easy to fit a child seat, and there’s a decent amount of space in the BMW X1’s boot – although a Q3 and GLB are roomier still.

SE

SE models are the cheapest in the X1 range and easy to spot because they're the only model to come with 17-inch alloy wheels and a plain black grille. Kit levels inside are perfectly reasonable, though, and include a 6.5-inch sat-nav display, climate control, automatic emergency braking, cruise control, a DAB digital radio and rear parking sensors.

Sport

Sport models are, unsurprisingly, sportier looking than basic SE cars thanks to their 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, they get sports seats, ambient lighting in the doors and race cloth upholstery that looks nicer than the trim in SE models. Everything else, though, is carried over from the basic car, so you get a 6.5-inch sat-nav display, climate control, automatic emergency braking, cruise control, a DAB digital radio and rear parking sensors.

xLine

For the best value in the range, choose an xLine model. They get 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights that look more distinctive than the basic units. Leather seats are standard, which are easier to clean than fabric and also more expensive looking, and the front seats are also heated. Everything else, though, is carried over from the basic car, so you get a 6.5-inch sat-nav display, climate control, automatic emergency braking, cruise control, a DAB digital radio and rear parking sensors.

M Sport

M Sport models are the most expensive in the range and come with sporty-looking bumpers, unique alloy wheels and lowered suspension. Inside, you get an M Sport steering wheel, sporty trim pieces and Alcantara leather trims that feels lovely. Everything else, though, is carried over from xLine trim, so you get LED lights, a 6.5-inch sat-nav display, climate control, automatic emergency braking, cruise control, a DAB digital radio and rear parking sensors.
