TOYOTA -AYGO

Toyota Aygo

The world of city cars is actually a pretty dull-looking one, with variations on a theme, such as the Volkswagen Up and Seat Mii, but the Toyota Aygo is actually a bit of a show-off.

The huge grille, contrasting roof and aggressively contoured bumpers certainly make it stand out next to the boring twins from VW and Seat, and better still, it comes with some seriously bold paint hues. How does luminous orange and black grab you?

It looks pretty eye-catching inside, too – providing you avoid entry-level models that look as welcoming as an empty warehouse. All Toyota Aygos get a minimalist centre console and a touchscreen infotainment system with intuitive smartphone mirroring for Apple and Android devices. There are lots of hard plastics dotted about the place, but that’s not uncommon in small city cars.

Space in the front seats is pretty good for such a small car, but you can’t adjust the height of the driver’s seat in entry-level Toyota Aygos. You don’t get adjustable lumbar support, either, but at least there’s plenty of padding to prevent uncomfortable backache on long trips.

Unfortunately, you can’t say the same of the Toyota Aygo’s back seats. Like the VW Up, it comes with just the two, but they aren’t particularly spacious or well-cushioned and anyone over six-foot will really struggle for leg- and headroom. The Aygo’s boot isn’t as big as the Up’s, either, and a very tall boot lip means it isn’t particularly easy to load.

X-Play

The X-Play is the next trim level up from the base. As standard it comes with 15-inch steel wheels and hubcaps, air conditioning, Bluetooth, leather multifunction steering wheel and electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors.

X-Trend

x-trend gets 15-inch black alloy wheels, auto headlights and various bits of red and black details on the exterior. Over the x-play model you get automatic air con as opposed to manual air-con.

JBL Edition

X-Clusiv

The X-Clusiv comes with the same specification as the X-Cite but as standard has a few extra goodies up its sleeve, such as, black 15-inch alloy wheels, black metallic paint and black carpet mats with the X-Clusiv logo

NISSAN - MICRA

Nissan Micra

The Nissan Micra is a bit of a looker in the world of small cars, and better still it’s even slightly less expensive than the likes of the big-selling Vauxhall Corsa.

All but basic Visia and Visia+ cars come with a slick 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto as standard.

Thankfully, the Nissan Micra’s cabin doesn’t just look good – all the switches feel solid and both the driver’s seat and sporty steering wheel come with loads of adjustment so you’ll have no trouble getting comfortable.

Unfortunately, you can’t have lumbar support (to help reduce backache on long drives) on any model and the Nissan Micra’s back seats are more cramped than those in most alternatives. There’s a reasonable amount of knee room but passengers over six-foot tall will struggle for headroom and the narrow central seat makes carrying three abreast very cosy indeed.

The Nissan Micra’s 300-litre boot is pretty practical, though. It’s a little bigger than the ones in a Corsa, Polo or Fiesta but its tall boot lip can make loading heavy items difficult. You don’t get any handy shopping hooks but you can fold the back seats down in a two-way (60:40) split if you need to carry long luggage and a back-seat passenger at once.

Two petrol engines are on offer, with either a five or six-speed manual, or CVT automatic gearbox. Pick the turbocharged 100hp 1.0-litre petrol if you mainly potter around town – it isn’t exactly quick, but it’s strong enough to feel nippy in town and is always smooth and quiet. In fact, it makes the more powerful 117hp 1.0-litre look a little unnecessary.

Visia

Visia+ simply adds manual air conditioning and stop-start to the Visia’s kit. That kit includes 15-inch steel wheels, electric mirrors, USB and aux connections, Bluetooth, automatic headlights and wipers, front electric windows, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and high beam assist.

Acenta

On top of Visia+ equipment, the Acenta model gains 16-inch wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Car Play/Android Auto compatibility, a 4-speaker stereo with DAB radio and cruise control.

N-Sport

The sportiest offering of the range. Comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, stiffer sports suspension, a different steering tune, chrome exhaust pipe, part leather sports seats, rear view camera, rear parking sensors and key less entry and start. That’s on top of Accenta’s cruise control, multi function steering wheel, traffic sign recognition and 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB connection, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Then there’s electric mirrors, automatic headlights and wipers, front electric windows, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and high beam assist.

Tekna

Top-grade Tekna models get satnav with TomTom live traffic updates, BOSE stereo with headrest speakers, rear parking sensors and reversing camera, rear electric windows and a leather gearknob on top of Acenta equipment.

NISSAN - LEAF

Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is a pretty good way to get into electric vehicle ownership, because it has strong performance and a sleek design, although you’ll need to spend a decent amount extra to get the best range, mind you.

Gone are the days when buying an electric car marked you out as some kind of automotive pioneer. Not any more; having an EV is a bit like having a reusable face mask – you’re doing the right thing but don’t need to shout about it.

It’s a similar story inside, where you’ll find a fairly unassuming, yet nicely laid out cabin. Entry-level models look pretty plain, but higher-spec cars come with some partial leather seats with blue stitching to spruce things up a bit.

Appropriately for a futuristic electric car, you don’t have to fork out for any of the Nissan Leaf’s infotainment tech. Sat-nav, smartphone mirroring and a digital driver’s display all come as standard. It’s just a shame that the 8-inch touchscreen isn’t particularly responsive.

Acenta

The Acenta trim represents the best value. This trim level adds technology to the safety features of Visia trim. You get Nissan’s seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat nav which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also comes with a reversing camera. You also get adaptive cruise control and 16-inch alloy wheels replace the steel wheels on the Visia grade.

N-Connecta

The N-Connecta trim adds upgraded looks, comfort and technology. You get heated part-leather seats, heated steering wheel and a 360-degree parking camera. On the outside, you get 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels and privacy rear glass. This is on top of a seven-inch touchscreen with sat-nav and smartphone mirroring plus a raft of safety assists.

Tekna

The Tekna trim is the top-spec Leaf so it gets Nissan's autonomous driving assistant as standard as well as full leather heated front and rear seats. You also get an updated sound system by Bose with seven speakers, dual zone climate control, cruise control, keyless entry and go, auto wipers and the e-Pedal system. All that, plus a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav, a 360-degree parking camera and smartphone mirroring as well. On the outside, you get 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels, privacy rear glass and automatic fully LED headlights

e+ N-Connecta

e+ Tekna

Pick an E+ Tekna version of the nissan leaf  and you get 17-inch alloy wheels, partial leather and man-made suede seats, a 360-degree surround-view camera, tinted rear windows and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, Bluetooth connectivity and satellite navigation. You also get heated seats and a heated steering wheel, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and a system that'll accelerate, brake and steer for you in traffic jams.

LAND ROVER - DEFENDER 110

Land Rover Defender

The all-new Land Rover  Defender will look great on the school run, where it will out-cool rivals such as the Mercedes GLE or Volvo XC90, but it also has all the off-road capabilities that you would ever need – and probably some you’ll never need, too.

It has a modern cool design, comes with some neat tech and is spacious too. So it can do everything those posh lifestyle SUVs can do, with the added reassurance of awesome off-road and towing ability.   The Land Rover Defender is an off-road equivalent. It’s a comfortable, practical and stylish SUV that you can drive across a desert, should you wish. Although you probably won’t.

You can clearly see the original Land Rover in the design of the new Defender. This is especially the case at the rear, with its flat back end, complete with spare wheel and side-hinged rear door that opens outwards, and the Alpine lights in the roof.

The front’s looks aren’t quite so classic. The roundish headlights look a bit like those on the original Defender, but the bluff front grille gives the Defender a much more modern look.

As with the original, the new Land Rover Defender comes in the short-wheelbase 90 model and the 110 long-wheelbase version. You can customize your own car’s look with a range of optional accessories – there are 170 of them – from protective body panels to a raised air intake for when you’re wading through deep water.

Entry-level cars come with a body-colored roof, white-painted, 18-inch steel wheels and LED headlights, while top-spec cars get big alloy wheels and contrasting paintwork. But even the steel wheels in the basic models look cool and don’t make the Defender seem cheap.

Cheap isn’t how you’d describe the interior either. It’s another mixture of traditional and modern, like a fashionable city-center flat with top-spec tech and exposed brickwork. Soft materials sit alongside deliberately exposed screws and rubber floor mats (though you can get carpet if you like).

Standard

As standard you get a body-colored roof, automatic headlights and wipers, puddle lights and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside you get aether steering wheel, two-zone climate control and key less entry. The infotainment system comes with a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Safety kit includes a 3D surround camera, cruise control with speed limiter, lane keeping assist and a wade sensing system.

S

Over the standard car, Defender S models get an interactive driver's display and the click and go integrated base unit for the front seats. They also come with 19-inch alloy wheels.

SE

Over the kit you get in the standard Defender, SE gets blind spot assist and a clear exit monitor that will warn you if any potential hazards as you get out of the car. You also get the Clear Sight interior rear mirror that uses a rear-facing camera if your view out the rear is blocked. You can tell it's an SE model on the outside with its front fog lights and electrically folding heated door mirrors

X-Dynamic S

The Defender X-Dynamic range starts with the S, which alongside the styling add-ons for this trim range, has 19-inch alloys, all-season tyres, a 10-inch touchscreen, a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and leather seats.

X-Dynamic SE

Moving up from the X-Dynamic S, the SE version has upgraded LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, a video rear-view mirror, blind spot assist and a Meridian stereo system.

First Edition

Over the standard car, the Defender First Edition comes with electronic air suspension and a configurable Terrain Response system. You also get premium LED headlights, privacy glass and 20-inch alloy wheels. The steering wheel is heated and you get a leather gearshift and you get the Clear Sight interior rear view mirror, which uses a camera if your view out the back is blocked.

HSE

Over SE models, HSE cars get a sliding panoramic roof, heated and cooled front seats with adjustable memory, a heated steering wheel and a leather interior. On the safety front, HSE models get adaptive cruise control, rear collision monitor and rear traffic monitor.

X-Dynamic HSE

The X-Dynamic HSE comes with Matrix LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, extra leather on the inside including on the steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof and 14-way electric front seats.

X

As well as the kit that comes with the standard car, the Defender X gets electronic air suspension and Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system. On the exterior you can see orange brake callipers, a gloss black bonnet and various bits of chrome detailing. You get 20-inch alloys too. Inside you get the ClearSight interior rear view mirror, an upgraded Meridian sound system and a head-up display.
